Fall 2012 Symposium
Minority Rights and Majority Rule: The Arguments and Policies Behind the Proposed 2012 Minnesota Constitutional Amendments and the Danger or Myth of the Tyrannical Majority

Date: Friday, October 26, 2012
Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Anderson Center, Hamline University Saint Paul campus
Registration begins at 8 a.m.; program begins at 8:45 a.m.
CLE credits will be applied for.

This symposium will gather local and national scholars, policy makers and government officials to discuss these amendments within the scope of balancing democracy and equality, and the proper role of majority rule referendums. The central issues to be addressed at the symposium include the impact of placing minority rights up for majority vote, the legality and consequences of such Constitutional amendments, and whether a more appropriate venue to address these issues exists.

Participants will focus on the pros and cons of majority rule referendums, the legality of their respective positions, and creative ways to address these issues in the future. The symposium will provide a needed dialog so near to a critical moment in Minnesota history and allow leaders and practitioners the opportunity to learn more about the legality of the proposed amendments, and the effects they may have on minority groups throughout the state.
