Certificate in International Business Negotiation

Effective negotiation skills are critical for success as a lawyer, business person, or other professional. As the world draws closer by globalization, understanding and developing effective negotiation skills in the context of different cultures and emerging technologies becomes even more critical for success.

Program Overview

The Dispute Resolution Institute at Hamline University School of Law in cooperation with the International Institute for Conflict Engagement and Resolution (IICER), Hong Kong Shue Yan University, offers students the opportunity to complete a 6-credit integrated in-residence and distance learning program in international business negotiation. The in-residence two-credit negotiation course introduces students to the skills and dynamics of the negotiation process.  Students will complete the in-residence negotiation course either in Hong Kong or Minnesota.  Thereafter, via distance learning, students from both courses will work and study together to complete a four-credit Advanced International Business Negotiation course.  This program format allows students to experience the dynamic nature of international business negotiation and to engage with each other in the way that international business occurs - both in person and through distance technology.  Using innovative pedagogy, law and business students and professionals will experience the full range of international business interactions - from internal business formation to the creation of international transactions and dispute resolution - all while overcoming real-time, language, culture, legal and social-structural differences.

In 2012, this certificate program attracted law and business school students, as well as lawyers, professors, and practicing business professionals from Egypt, India, Germany, Hong Kong, Mainland China, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
