Hamline's Dispute Resolution Institute offers certificates for students desiring a comprehensive exposure to international business negotiation, global arbitration, conflict theory, and advocacy and problem-solving.
The Health Law Institute at Hamline offers two health law certificates, one in general health law and one in health care compliance.
The Business Law Institute's certificate offering combines coursework, research and writing, practical experience, and networking opportunities that provide knowledge, skills, and insight critical to the successful practice of business law.
Dispute Resolution Institute Certificates
Effective negotiation skills are critical for success as lawyer, business person, or other professional. As the world draws closer by globalization, understanding and developing effective negotiation skills in the context of different cultures and emerging technologies becomes even more critical for success.
The six-credit Certificate in International Business Negotiation evolved from Hamline University School of Law's work leading an international project on Rethinking Negotiation Teaching. The Certificate in International Business Negotiation was designed to incorporate the lessons identified and developed by leading negotiation scholars and teachers from around the world. in this certificate program, students will learn negotiation in an internationally inter-disciplinary, multi-national classroom using innovative methods.
This Certificate designed exclusively for Hamline JD students seeks to integrate ADR and the day-to-day work of lawyers. CAPS students complete twenty-two credits of study, including three foundation courses (conflict theory, evidence, and negotiation), three process overview courses (mediation, arbitration, and litigation), advocacy practice (clinics, moot competitions, or practicums), and four elective credits (chosen from a rich array of pre-approved elective courses). Each student must complete a "Practice Perspective" requirement. This requirement will facilitate increased engagement with practitioners and the issues confronting the field.

Established in 1996, the fourteen-credit Certificate Program in Dispute Resolution enables students to develop their ADR knowledge and skills in an organized, thoughtful, and scholarly way. Students take a foundation course in conflict theory, complemented by three distinct ADR "process" courses; negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. After this nine-credit introduction to theory and practice, students round out their certificate curriculum with five elective credits chosen from a rich array of pre-approved elective courses.
This six-credit program summer abroad program at Queen Mary University of London, begins with a foundation course covering the salient aspects of U.S. arbitration law as it relates to domestic and international disputes. Building on the foundation experience, three advanced courses on international commercial arbitration give students the opportunity to apply basic principles in specialty areas. All students also complete a capstone arbitration advocacy course, which uses an interactive workshop format to examine the advocacy challenges and opportunities unique to the arbitral process.
This program is an in-depth, transformative learning program designed to creatively advance the levels of collaborative practice and conflict competence among health professionals and industry leaders who are responsible for: improving patient safety; achieving accountable care; developing health work environments; and creating a resilient workforce.
The program provides health professionals with the opportunity to integrate existing professional competencies with theories, skills, mindsets and techniques necessary for effectively addressing the relational dynamics that impact patient care and that define the culture of healthcare.
Health Law Institute Certificates
The General Health Law Certificate shows future employers that you have concentrated your studies in health law and have acquired a significant understanding and practical application of health law concepts. The General Health Law Certificate will appear as a special designation on your JD transcript. Certificate recipients will also receive a paper certificate upon successful completion of the Certificate program.
A compliance certification helps you:
- Gain the skills needed to guide a health care organization through the complex maze of government laws and regulations
- Effectively develop and deliver training; create and enforce a code of conduct; audit, monitor, and investigate; assess risk; and be a champion of an ethical corporate culture
- Stand at the intersection of governing law and organizational management.
The Hamline University School of Law Health Care Compliance Certificate Program teaches these critical skills. The program provides a thorough examination of governing laws and regulations, introduces students to industry leaders, and focuses on hands-on learning and interactive simulations through its in-depth and in-person curriculum. With this certificate, students are eligible to sit for the Certified in Healthcare Compliance Exam, which can demonstrate that they possess the requisite knowledge and meet the
national standards set by the Compliance Certification Board (CCB).
Business Law Institute Certificates
Available to all Hamline JD students, the Business Law Certificate combines coursework, research and writing, practical experience, and networking opportunities that provide knowledge, skills, and insight critical to the successful practice of business law. The Certificate provides a strong foundation of core knowledge and skills but also allows for plenty of flexibility. Through electives, practical experience, extra-curricular activities, and the writing requirement, students can focus on a specific area of business law or explore several different areas and niches. A unique feature of Hamline’s Business Law Certificate is its ethics requirement. Ethical decision-making is essential to successful business practices, so every Certificate student will take at least one business ethics course that introduces important ethical issues and perspectives.
