Ashton Boon, a third-year law student at Hamline Law has been honored for her efforts in providing legal services to the disadvantaged. Ashton was presented with the 2011 Bernard P. Becker Award by the Minnesota State Bar Association at its April 28 Assembly meeting. Only one student is awarded each year.
Ashton is a Minnesota Justice Foundation pro bono law clerk. She assists attorneys from Leonard, Street and Deinard with Social Security cases, including legal research, drafting memorandum on assigned issues, and other duties. She works with a variety of clients including those that do not speak English as a first language, and those with mental health issues. Ashton also works at the Minnesota Aids Project, managing over 40 cases.
The Becker Awards are presented each year for work that exemplifies the dedication and commitment to helping poor people that marked the career of the late Bernard Becker, a renowned legal aid attorney, law professor, and magistrate judge.
