Mission Statement:
The Hamline Veterans’ Association (HVA) is a student organization open to all students regardless of whether they are affiliated with the military or simply have a desire to show their support for our Armed Forces. The HVA is dedicated to acting as a liaison between the School Administration and Veterans. In the wake of increased deployments, students in the Reserve and National Guard often find themselves interrupting their studies in order to answer the call to duty. This causes a great deal of hardship on the student, the administration, and their families.
The HVA’s Objectives are as follows:
- Support and encourage academic excellence and professional growth among student veterans
- Create a welcoming environment for veterans and help promote awareness of veterans’ issues
- Act as a liaison between the Administration and Student Veterans, providing a point of contact for current students and future applicants
- Act as an intermediary between the Student Veteran, their unit, and the law school should conflicts arise
- Create greater awareness of the role Veterans play in today’s society
- Maintain contact with deployed students, ensuring the lines of communication with the school are maintained
- Assist in the reintegration of Student Veterans upon their return from deployment
- Participate in legislative lobbying activities related to Veterans’ issues and inspire volunteerism in the law school community
- Provide opportunities for fellowship and social interaction among Student Veterans and practicing Attorney Veterans within the legal community
- Develop and encourage cooperation with other student organizations at Hamline University School of Law
Goals:
- Creation of Veterans’ Endowment Fund
- The goal of this fund is to establish an annual merit-based scholarship to assist a worthy Veteran pay for his or her legal education
- Establishment of Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) Clinic
- The intent of this program is to allow students to provide pro bono legal services to veterans and their families.
- Establishment of Army Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) Practicum
- The intent of this program is to allow all students with an interest in the Judge Advocate General Corps to participate in a practicum in order to determine whether the military is a good fit for them prior to making a commitment
