Class Notes March 2008

Dustin Bower '07 joined the Minneapolis-based law firm of Purdue & Awsumb, PA. He will focus he practice on commercial litigation and construction law.

Meghan Gaspar '07 has joined the Minneapolis office of Gislason & Hunter LLP. Gaspar will be practicing in the areas of medical malpractice defense, insurance defense and civil litigation.

Stephen Largent '07 was hired as an Associate on the Worker's Compensation team at Whyte Hirschboek Dudek S.C. in Milwaukee, WI.

Susan Tegt '07 joined Barna, Guzy, & Steffen, Ltd. as an associate in the firm's employment litigation and business law practice section.

Stephen Ringquist '06 joined the firm Jensen Anderson Sondrall, P.A. located in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Stephanie Haedt '03 has joined the law firm of Peterson, Savelkoul, & Benda Ltd. as a shareholder.

Heather Toft '02 is an attorney placement director for the Esquire Group, A Special Counsel Company. She will specialize in attorney job searches.

Todd Anlauf '00 has become a partner at Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly, LLP. He works in the commercial finance department.

Jason Kohlmeyer '00 joined Farrish Johnson Law Office, Chtd., he will practice in the fields of criminal defense, family law, and civil litigation.

Angela Beranek Brandt '99 was named as a partner at the Larson King law firm. Brandt is a trial lawyer and focuses her civil litigation practice in the areas of products liability, commercial, and employment litigation.

Livia Babcock '99 was elected partner by Meagher & Geer P.L.L.P. She practices in the areas of commercial litigation, employment practices, and professional liability.

Eric Gonzaga '99 recently was named Managing Director & Practice Leader of the Compensation & Benefits Consulting Group (CBC) at Grant Thornton, an international accounting and management consultancy. Gonzaga will continue to focus his practice on design, governance, and tax compliance of management and staff total compensation programs.

Michael Jacobs '98 was elected as shareholder for the Minneapolis firm of Leonard, Street and Deinard.

Julie Callsen '93 was elected as a partner to the firm Tucker Ellis & West LLP. Callsen is a member of the Trial Department and focuses her practice on pharmaceutical, medical malpractice, and product liability litigation.

Robert Bauer '92 was elected to the Severson, Sheldon, Dougherty & Molenda, P.A. firm's board of directors.

Janet Barke Cain '89 was appointed by Governor Pawlenty to a new 1st Judicial District trial court bench judgeship in Carver County.

Roger Kramer '89 was elected to the board of the Academy of Certified Trial Lawyers of Minnesota (ACTLM). Kramer's trial practice focuses on the areas of personal injury insurance law and alternative dispute resolution.

Loren Solfest '86 was elected to the board of directors at Severson, Sheldon, Dougherty & Molenda, P.A.

Debra Yerigan '85 was named shareholder of the Minneapolis firm Messerli & Kramer P.A. Yerigan practices exclusively in divorce and family law. She has extensive experience representing clients in marriage dissolution, child custody, child support, parenting time, spousal maintenance, property division, post-dissolution, paternity, domestic abuse and antenuptial matters.

Michael G. Dougherty '81 was re-elected president of Severson, Sheldon, Dougherty & Molenda, P.A. He also has been elected to the firm's board of directors.

Jeffrey Baill '80 has been awarded the 2007 Don Kramer Award from the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys (NARCA). Baill was honored for his longstanding impact on the legal profession as the founder of the National Association of Subrogation Professionals.

Nathan Hansen '07 and Heather (Rain) Hansen'07 were married on October 6, 2007 in Lincolnshire, IL.

Kevin Melvin ('06) and his wife, Sara Smith ('04), announce the birth of their first child, Nicholas Patrick Melvin, born on December 10, 2007.

Emmerson Ward '02 and wife Susan Ward welcomed the birth of Talbot James Ward on January 21, 2008. Talbot is adored by his two older sisters, Louisa (4) and Lily (2 1/2).

Ryan Kaatz '04 has joined the Minneapolis office of Faegre & Benson LLP as a staff attorney in the intellectual property practice.

Megan Clinefelter '04 has joined the Minneapolis office of Faegre & Benson LLP in the firm's litigation practice area.

Megan Hladilek '07 has joined the Minneapolis office of Faegre & Benson LLP in the firm's employment practice area.

Victor Vieth '87 has been honored for "Outstanding Service to the Profession" by Minnesota Lawyer, an independent weekly newspaper.

Diane Swenson '81 has been named President of the organization National Lumber and Building Materials Dealers Association. She will be responsible for guiding NLBDA's organizational performance, providing strategic leadership and serving as the Association's spokesperson on national issues.

Cheryl Stanton '97 has become a shareholder in Anthony Ostlund & Baer. She practices in all areas of commercial litigation.

Katherine Canadeo Thompson '06 has joined the law firm of Peterson, Berk & Cross, S.C. as an associate in the family law department. The firm has offices in Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Angela Beranek Brandt '99 has become a partner at Larson King, LLP. Angela is an experienced trial lawyer and focuses her civil litigation practice in the areas of products liability, commercial, and employment litigation.

Stephanie Streff Angolkar '07 graduated from Hamline University School of Law in May 2007 and joined the Minnesota Court of Appeals as a judicial law clerk.

Frank Fernandez '05 has been appointed to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation's 13-member board of directors. The board directs the state's largest grant making foundation dedicated exclusively to improving health in Minnesota.

Family

Lucie McGee '97, her husband Thomas and their son Edward (2) celebrated the birth of Samuel Thomas on November 5, 2007. Lucie continues to work as an Assistant City Attorney for the city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Tiffany Doherty-Schooler '07, husband Jason, and children Jackson and Jorja, welcomed their new son and brother William Wellstone, born September 27, 2007. Tiffany is an attorney with the Law Offices of Lenore L. Flinn, in Hutchinson, MN, practicing in Estates, Personal Injury, and Medical Malpractice.

Obituaries

Evelyn Anderson '81 died at the age of 89 on January 17, 2008, at the Fairview Seminary Home. She practiced with Peder Hong, and then had a private practice in Red Wing. In 1986 she received the Pro Bono Public Attorney Award.

Class Notes January 2008

Patricia (Patty) Assmann '04 recently was admitted to the Minnesota Bar and is now admitted to practice in three states, including Minnesota, Florida and Wisconsin. Patricia is still working for attorney Ann Loughridge Kerr of Clearwater, FL, focusing on discovery issues.

Lindsay Brice '07 began a judicial clerkship in Olmsted County in October 2007.

Ann Knox-Bauer ‘91 has been appointed by Governor Jim Doyle as judge to the Taylor County Circuit Court in Wisconsin. She will begin serving in late January 2008.

Mary Schwind ‘96 has been honored with an Outstanding Service Award by the Minnesota Justice Foundation. She is recognized as an exemplary private practice attorney who has demonstrated a commitment to providing legal service to the public.

Family

Christina Garner '99 and Jon Gensler were married on October 13, 2007, at the Monte Carlo Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Christina presently serves as Senior Associate Marketing Counsel for NASCAR, Inc.

Obituaries

Claudia Saavedra Hoyos `96
passed away on December 13, 2008, at the age of 38, surrounded by her husband Juan and her closest family members and friends. She had been admitted to in-patient hospice care at North Memorial on December 5.

Claudia is survived by many family members including her husband, Juan; her mother, Trudy; her brothers, Leo (Marisol), Mario, Christian and her brother Jorge Saavedra, a 1997 graduate of Hamline University School of Law.

Claudia was born in Santiago, Chile, and came to the United States at the age of six. She graduated from Bismarck Century High School in 1986, Georgetown University in 1991, and Hamline University School of Law in 1996. After graduating with honors form Hamline's law school, Claudia worked as a securities and international law attorney, first at Dorsey & Whitney and later at Moneygram International. Claudia also was involved in many community activites and served on the boards of nonprofit organizations such as Pangea World Theater.

Services were held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007. In lieu of flowers or donations, memorials can be directed to the Claudia Saavedra Hoyos Scholarship Fund at Wells Fargo.
