Hamline Law School's course offerings cover
an impressive array of diverse topics. For students seeking
specialization in a particular subject, the following designated focus
areas provide guidance for achieving both breadth and depth of
experience in selected legal fields. The suggested classes will give
students a solid foundation in the particular area, as well as exposure
to more sophisticated treatments, including the opportunity to do field
work and self-directed research.
Every Hamline Law School
graduate obtains the knowledge and skills required for the competent
and ethical practice of law, regardless of whether a particular focus
area is adopted. Specialization in one particular topic is not
essential. In fact, the full absorption of one focus area may not even
be desirable for students who are uncertain regarding their substantive
interests or just seek a broader-based academic experience. Even those
students who are confident of their commitment to a specific focus area
should regard the recommended courses as useful guidelines, not as
comprehensive course requirements.
Each focus area includes an impressive range of
regularly-scheduled, traditional offerings. In addition, Hamline offers
so much more in every substantive area, from clinical opportunities
and/or externship options, to classroom courses that challenge students
in new and exciting ways. In seminars, students have the ability to
explore sophisticated subjects in-depth, working closely with faculty
to develop and present a compelling and extensive written thesis.
Selected Topics courses augment the established course catalog by
providing somewhat specialized, sometimes unusual, and often
cutting-edge subjects that change with current events. Finally,
students have the ability to craft an Independent Study, a one-on-one
research and writing experience with an accomplished scholar in the
student's chosen field.
