Hamline’s
transformative JD/MBA prepares students to lead in today's dynamic global
environment
Hamline University School of Law and Hamline University Graduate
School of Management have combined the strengths of their two innovative
programs to offer a JD/MBA for students interested in earning both a
juris doctor in law and a masters in business administration.
The Hamline MBA is organized
around four modules: (1) Leading People with Intentionality and Purpose;
(2) Managing and Leveraging Organizational Finances and Operations;
(3) Understanding External Environments for Long-term Success; and (4)
Strategic and Entrepreneurial Management. Law students in the joint
degree program are able to integrate their sophisticated understanding
of corporate, commercial, and regulatory law and conflict management
with a comprehensive foundation of business management concepts.
“Students will emerge from our program with a strong sense of self, solid quantitative skills, integrated knowledge of core business disciplines, and the interpersonal and communication skills needed to successfully guide organizations and communities through growth and continuous improvement,” said Graduate School of Management Dean Julian Schuster.
The JD/MBA reinforces themes central to both schools’ educational focus. Ethics, global awareness, strategic change, conflict management, critical thinking, collaborative problem solving and effective communication are skills emphasized by both schools.
“The joint degree program will enable lawyers and business professionals involved with law to help start-up companies succeed and navigate the challenges of a highly complex, global marketplace,” added Hamline University School of Law Dean Jon Garon. “Our graduates will be prepared to make a difference when they graduate, and to flourish in a changing world for decades to come.”
To enroll, students must apply
separately and be accepted into each of the two Hamline schools. Students
complete their first year of law school and then integrate the modules
of the MBA into their three remaining academic years. Even if they are
not interested in pursuing the joint JD/MBA degree, Hamline law students
will have the option of adding MBA coursework to their legal education.
The School of Law adds the JD/MBA to its growing list of joint degree opportunities. In cooperation with the Graduate School of Management, the schools currently offer joint JD-masters degree programs in nonprofit management and public administration. The law school offers JD-masters degree options in organizational leadership and library science with the College of St. Catherine. Hamline University School of Law also offers the first-in-the-nation JD/MFA in creative writing with the Hamline University Graduate School of Liberal Studies.
As Hamline University Graduate School of Management repositions itself as a premier provider of business education, the JD/MBA is the natural addition to the program and further enriches the diversity and academic excellence of its student body.
