Laura Hermer is an associate professor at Hamline University School of Law. Her current research focuses in part on Medicaid policy, in particular the historic and present tensions between the federal and state governments in regulating and funding the program, and the impact these struggles have had, not just on beneficiaries, but also on the greater health care system. Her other areas of interest include private health coverage, Medicare, medical malpractice, and bioethics.
Prior to her appointment at Hamline, Hermer was an assistant professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health and a member of the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. In addition to teaching in the graduate and medical schools, she directed the Health Economics and Policy Theme in the School of Medicine, and was principal investigator on a contract with the Texas Department of State Health Services to track and analyze Texas municipal secondhand smoke ordinances (www.utmb.edu/shsordinances).
