1.  LIBRARY HOURS

Library hours are subject to change.  While classes are in session, the library will be open "regular hours." Changes in this schedule--"special hours"-- will be posted on the library hours page (http://www.hamline.edu/law/library/hours_of_library.html) as linked from the homepage, on the library door, and at the entrances to the Law Building. To confirm hours on any day, call the Library at 651-523-2125.

2.  LIBRARY SERVICES

REFERENCE SERVICES

During the school year, while classes are in session, the reference desk is staffed from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Reference librarians are available to help you find and use library resources, including print, internet resources, and computer assisted legal research services.

You may contact a reference librarian by stopping by the reference desk; by phone (651.523.2937); or you can email your questions to Reference_law@gw.hamline.edu.

CLICnet

ClicNet is the online public access catalog containing records of all materials that are available at Hamline Law Library. It also contains records of the holdings of all the libraries in the CLIC Consortium. Law students may check out materials from any of the libraries in the Consortium, which include Augsburg College Library, Bethel College Learning Center, Bethel Theological Seminary, College of St. Catherine Libraries, Concordia University Library, Hamline Bush Library, Macalester College Library, Northwestern College, St. Paul Seminary Library, and the University of St. Thomas Libraries. In addition, Hamline Law Students have borrowing privileges at the University of Minnesota Law Library and William Mitchell College of Law Library.

When borrowing materials from any of these libraries, including Hamline Law Library, be ready to present your Hamline Law School ID Card.

Interlibrary Loan

If the item you want is not available at Hamline Law Library or any of the CLIC libraries, you may request the item through the Library's ILLiad Interlibrary Loan service. On the left navigation bar of the homepage, choose Use Library Services, then Interlibrary Loan. You will be taken to the ILLiad page where you will be required to register the first time you use it. After that, when you go to the ILLiad site, you simply enter your Hamline username and password to use the system.

If an item you wish to borrow is not in the Hamline Law Library but is available at another CLIC library, while in the ClicNet online catalog, choose “Request Item” and fill out the online form. Be sure to fill out the form with as much information as possible. When the item arrives, you will be notified by email and can pick it up at the Circulation Desk.

Computer Assisted Legal Research (CALR)

The law library subscribes to a number of CALR services, including Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw. These services contain on-line federal and state cases, statutes, regulations, many secondary legal sources, and non-legal sources as well. CALR training is included as part of the Legal Research and Writing Course. 1L students are given full access to these services during the first semester of law school. Questions about Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw, or any of the other CALR services should be directed to one of the reference librarians.

CALI Exercises

CALI, a non-profit consortium of law schools, has developed an extensive library of lessons designed to enhance the student’s learning experience. Students can pick up a free CALI disc at the library circulation desk or can use the online lessons at www.CALI.org. To use the online lessons you must enter an access code which can be obtained in the law library. You then set up your personal username and password.

Research Network Computers

The library has a bank of research network computers that provide access to many sources including citators, Loislaw and Versuslaw (CALR services), periodical indexes, congressional materials, on-line catalogs (including CLicNet), public access legal research sites, and many others. This bank of terminals is located across from the circulation desk. If you have questions about how to use any of the materials accessible through these computers, ask a reference librarian.

Reserve Materials and Past Exams

You can search and view records for all Hamline Law Reserve materials, both print and electronic materials, through the Course Reserves page at the following location: http://www.hamline.edu/law/library/Use_Library_Services/coursereserves.htm. Full text of the document listed in a record may or may not be available online.

Some materials are available only through traditional print reserve readings available for checkout in person at the circulation desk.

Other materials, called "Electronic Reserves" or "E-Reserves," are available online in full text from any computer with Internet access. Most available exams, for example, are in E-Reserve format. When you receive your search results, you may access E-Reserve materials by clicking on the title of any document designated "electronic copy available."  You will be prompted for your "barcode" (the library code on the back of your Hamline ID card).

Tape Duplicator and Typewriter Services

A tape duplicator is available for patron use. If you need help operating the tape duplicator, the library staff can help you. Please remember that copyright restrictions apply to the duplication of audio tapes. A typewriter is provided for patron use. If you need assistance, ask one of the library staff.

Library Web Site

The law library web site is the gateway to legal research and to information about the law library. Visit us at http://www.hamline.edu/law/library/law_library.html.

Lost and Found

Lost and found personal items are stored at the Circulation Desk for a limited period of time. The circulation desk attendant or any member of the library staff can assist you. A reminder: do not leave your personal belongings unattended in the library. While theft is rare, it does occur.

Wireless Access

Wireless access for your laptop is available in the law library. To log onto the wireless network, use your Hamline username and password. You must have a Hamline email account in order to use the wireless network. If you experience problems getting coverage, please report it to networksupport@hamline.edu.

Computer Lab

There is a bank of computers in the computer lab. This lab is maintained by the Hamline Computing Center. Students are free to use the computers in the lab and classroom during hours the library is open. Printers for Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw are located near the computer lab. When printing materials from either service, the print jobs automatically go to these printers. Be sure to pick up your print jobs promptly, as they are tossed after 7 days.

Copier/Printers

There are two copier/printers on the first floor of the library. When printing any document other than a Westlaw or Lexis document the print job will be sent to one of these machines. To use them, you will be prompted to enter your print billing code. Students’ print billing codes can be found on Piperline, which is accessible from the library’s website.

These machines may also be used as copiers. To copy a document, you must either swipe your Hamline ID card or enter your print billing code into the card reader. The copiers also take coins and $1 and $5 bills. There is a change machine under the stairway.

There is also a copier on the upper level of the law library.

Carrels

Study carrels are available on a first come first served basis. All carrels are numbered. If you find a light burned out in one of the carrels, please notify a library staff member.

Group Study Rooms

These rooms are located on the upper level of the law library and are available for groups of two or more students. There is a reservation book at the Circulation Desk. All patrons are subject to the room reservation rules, which are found in the reservation book.

3.  Circulation Policies

-Your Hamline ID card allows you to borrow materials from the library. Please present it every time you want to check out an item.

-Reserve materials circulate for two hours. If no one has requested a reserve item, it may be renewed. Late fines accrue for reserve materials not returned on time.

-Non-reserve items circulate for six weeks. Renewals may be made online through ClicNet. Holds placed on items pre-empt renewals.

-Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. Materials more than one month overdue are presumed lost and will be billed to the patron. Borrowing privileges of patrons who have unpaid fines/bills are restricted.

-Missing items. If an item is missing, please report it to the Circulation Desk so a search can be conducted.

-Library Security System. All materials are “tagged” to trigger an alarm if the item is removed from the library without being checked out. When the alarm sounds, patrons are asked to return to the Circulation desk.

-Confidentiality. Library circulation records are confidential information.

4.  General Policies

          -Noise and Cell Phone Use:

The upper level is a QUIET STUDY AREA. No talking and no cell phone use is allowed on the upper level.

The lower level is a LOW NOISE AREA. Please keep your voices low and your cell phones set at “Silent ring”. Take phone calls outside the library.

The computer lab is a QUIET AREA. No talking and no cell phone use is allowed in the computer lab.
