HUSL Defeats Mitchell, Helps Raise Funds for SPPS
|
Hamline University School of Law is once again the proud owners of the Res Ipsa Cup! On Saturday, March 14, Hamline Law Hockey defeated William Mitchell Law Hockey 8-4 at Drake Arena in St Paul. William Mitchell had 17 skaters to Hamline's 10, and the game was closely contested much of the way. But in the 3rd period, Hamline Law Hockey dug deep and pulled away, scoring four 3rd period goals! From our 1L players to our veteran 3L members, Hamline Law Hockey played as a team and demonstrated the camaraderie, teamwork and leadership for which Hamline University School of Law students are known. Most importantly, the event raised more than $700 for this year's charity, the St. Paul Public Schools Foundation. The ultimate goals of the Res Ipsa Cup game are to support charitable organizations within the community, increase school spirit, pageantry and unity, and strengthen inter-school relationships between law students, former players and alumni, and the broader legal community. The 2009 installment certainly achieved those goals. Hamline's winning roster included captain Joe Van Thomme, 3L; Ben Head, 3L; Tazio Lombardo, 3L; Frank McQuillan Jr., 3L; Mike Plante, 3L; Alex Rogosheske, 2L; Matt Kovacich, 2L; Doug Curella, 2L; Evan Zach, 2L; Chad Carr, 1L; Ben Hanson, 1L; Matt Thompson, 1L. |
Successful Show Highlights Diverse Cultures

The Hamline University School of Law Student Culture and Diversity Committee sponsored a successful Culture and Diversity Style Show: "Different Places; Beautiful Faces" on March 9. The event raised more than $1,300 for Project Homeless Connect in Minneapolis, which serves as a "one-stop-shop" where homeless citizens may receive housing information, employment referrals, medical checkups and other services.
Nearly one hundred attendees watched 30 Hamline law students representing some 20 countries as they modeled native attire of countries such as Holland, Vietnam, Columbia, and Ghana. Overall, the evening was an excellent excursion into numerous cultures as seen through the lens of fashion, food, and even dance with two cultural dance pieces from Ghana and the Pacific Rim.
Hamline Places Second in International Mediation Competition
Hamline students Mike Cavallaro and Sarah Belz emerged as finalists on Friday, February 13 at the prestigious International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Mediation Representation Competition in Paris. As competition finalists, they were both awarded coveted internships this summer. Sarah will be interning at the ICC in Paris; Mike at the international law firm Clifford Chance. They were coached by Hamline law alumna and adjunct faculty member Jessica Kuchta-Miller, who accompanied them to the competition in Paris. Jessica Kuchta-Miller teaches the Mediation Clinic at Hamline. Before this competition Mike Cavallaro took the Mediation Clinic in Spring 2008 and was a Student Director in Fall 2008. Sarah Belz took the Mediation Clinic in Fall 2008 and is currently a Spring 2009 Student Director."This is an incredibly tough competition judged by the best lawyers and mediators in the world. I know Mike and Sarah were honored to have been selected as one of only eight American teams invited to participate in this prestigious competition," said Professor James Coben, director of Hamline's Dispute Resolution Institute. "So emerging as one of the two best teams in the entire international competition is an impressive accomplishment. We are extremely proud of them."
With a view towards training lawyers to better meet the dispute resolution needs of today's cross-cultural market, the competition gives students an opportunity to test their problem-solving skills in a moot international mediation. More than 85 legal experts with a diverse range of expertise participate as volunteer mediators and judges.
