TopJournal of Law & Religion Salutes 25 Years of "Building Community and Deepening Understanding" In late October, Hamline University School of Law was the site of a three-day Symposium sponsored by the Journal of Law and Religion, which was billed as "A Symposium to Celebrate 25 Years of Conversation on the Shape and Quality of our Common Life." The symposium marked the Journal's 25th anniversary and brought together internationally respected lawyers and scholars, including Bucknell University Professor Emeritus Douglas Sturm (photo left) and University of Georgia School of Law Professor Emeritus Milner Ball (photo right), two of the most beloved and widely respected voices in the field of law and religion.
"Both Law and Religion are grappling with the same questions and the ongoing struggle of life. This Journal has become a great success in creating a dialogue around law and religion," noted Professor Sturm. Former Hamline University School of Law Dean Stephen Young also spoke at the symposium and reminiscenced about the Journal's founding. He credited Harvard Law Professor Harold Berman with conceiving of the Journal and convincing Hamline to serve as the base for the fledgling publication. Early editors and contributors from Hamline included Professor Emeritus Michael Scherschligt and Hamline Professors Howard Vogel, David Cobin and Marie Failinger, who currently serves as JLR Editor-in-Chief (photo center). Several presentations from the Symposium, including the "Conversation between a Lawyer and a Theologian" featuring Douglas Sturm and Milner Ball, can be found on the Hamline University School of Law website.
