Hamline will host its annual alumni reception on Thursday, June 25 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, French River Room 2. On Thursday October 1, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Minneapolis W Hotel - The Foshay, the "Negotiation at its Best" training will introduce alumni to the newest developments in the multi-disciplinary science of negotiation. Attendees will learn by doing through this highly interactive, skills-based program that will provide practical tools to resolve tough negotiation challenges, regardless of setting. Please register early, enrollment is limited to enhance the interactive nature of this training. Following the "Negotiation at its Best" training, the School of Law will host a reception welcoming DRI's new Director, Sharon Press, and honoring the pro bono efforts of our many law alumni who gave their time and negotiation skills to help the victims of the 35W bridge collapse. TopJune 2009 Faculty NotesProfessors Mary Trevor, Grace Mills, and Kim Holst presented at a conference on May 29-30 in Lubbock, Texas at Texas Tech University School of Law. The conference was called the Lone Star Regional Legal Research and Writing conference. Professors Trevor and Mills presented on the Hamline method of jointly teaching legal research with law library staff. Professor Mills also presented on a structure for teaching Advanced Legal Research using a hypothetical problem. Professor Holst presented on using ESL techniques and methodologies in the legal writing classroom to more effectively teach the law.
In April, Professor Blair presented a work in progress, Boundaries of the Sun: Medellin v. Texas and the Challenges of Supranational Adjudication, at Columbia University Law School.
Professor David Cobin's review of "Outlawed Pigs" will be published in the Journal of Law in Religion this coming June. In addition, "The Law of Slavery, Casebook and Materials," has been accepted for publication by Carolina Academic Press, edited by Paul Finkelman and David Cobin.
Professor Mary Jo Hunter was elected to the executive board for the AALS Section Indian Nations & Indigenous Peoples. She will serve as treasurer for 2009. Professor Angela McCaffrey was a presenter at a Minnesota Legal Services Coalition CLE on March 6, 2009. The CLE focused on Strategies for Unemployment and other Administrative Hearings. Professor McCaffrey's topic was on Presenting Evidence in those forums.
Professor Grace Mills has published an article about the digital divide: it is at 30 Univ. of La Verne L. Rev. 381 (2009). She is also presenting, with Megan Jens, Reference Librarian, at the 2009 CALI Conference in Boulder, CO about the topic of how a library can continue its vitality using technology under times of budgetary constraints. Grace will be participating in the Boulder Summer Conference on Legal Information: Teaching and Scholarship. She was one of 20 nation-wide participants selected: her paper is on the pedagogy of advanced legal research.
Professor Mary Jane Morrison has been named the 2008 Minnesota ESGR Ombudsman of the Year for her volunteer work mediating disputes between employers and members of the Guard and Reserves. ESGR is an agency of the Department of Defense, and these disputes are governed by the federal Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act [USERRA]. Professor Morrison also has been named to the Minneapolis Animal Care and Control's Chicken Work Group. The task of this work group is to examine the city's ordinance govening keeping chicken, pigeons and other fowl on residential properties. The group has its first meeting Thursday, March 19th. Professor Ken Swift had an article accepted for publication by the Mercer Law Review: The Public Policy Exception to Employment At-Will: Time to Retire a Noble Warrior? 61 Mercer L. Rev. __ (forthcoming Feb. 2010)

Staul ‘07 has joined the law firm of Wessels Sherman as an associate attorney practicing out of their Minneapolis office. He will focus on employment related litigation and counseling business clients.
Sonny Zhan ‘07 has recently joined Welch Allyn, Inc., located in New York, as an in-house patent counsel. Sarah Dunn Rohne ‘04 is serving as the New Lawyers Section Chair on the 2009-2010 Executive Committee of the Hennepin County Bar Association.
Jonathan M. Fritz ‘02 was recently elected as President-Elect of the Wisconsin Intellectual Property Law Association and to the Madison Symphony Orchestra's Board of Directors. He currently focuses his practice on intellectual property law in the Madison, WI office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C.
Kermit Nash ‘00 has joined the Minneapolis office of Gray Plant Mooty as a principal. He will practice in the firm's entrepreneurial services group, focusing in energy law, agribusiness, and mergers and acquisitions.
Angela Beranek Brandt ‘99, a partner with Larson King in St. Paul, was recently elected to membership in the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. FDCC membership is limited and selective. Its membership is composed of recognized leaders in the legal community who have achieved professional distinction. Jeannette Imani Appold ‘94 has started a nationwide adoption coaching business (www.adoptionplancoach.com) to guide potential adoptive parents through the non-legal aspects of the adoption process. She is also married to Kevin Appold ‘94 who is a Sr. Director of New Product Development at West, a Thomson Reuters company. They have a 6 year old son, named Sean, and a 3 year old daughter, named Aaliyah, and will celebrate 12 years of marriage this August. Sandy A. Williams ‘83 was recently elected to the Branch III circuit court bench as the first female judge in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. She spent 26 years in the district attorney's office, the last 22 as the county's first elected female district attorney, prosecuting criminals and working with their victims. She will begin her six-year term on June 1, 2009. FAMILY
Patty Houser ‘06 and Jess Houser welcomed their new daughter, Avery Nicole Houser, on June 16, 2009 at 1:58 p.m. Avery is 7 pounds 6 ounces and 19.25 inches.
Angela Beranek Brandt ‘99 and her husband Davin Brandt welcomed twin boys, Luke and Leo, on February 3, 2009. The twins join 3-year-old brother John. |
