Norway Course Information

Fjords of NorwayNorway: Comparative Law

This course surveys the Norwegian legal system, its history and traditions. Numerous field trips are planned and lectures are given (all in English) by Norwegian law professors and lawyers on the Norwegian legal system and institutions. Topics such as human rights, the European Free Trade Association, and numerous substantive areas of law and government are also covered. Hamline University School of Law faculty members lead discussions comparing the developing Norwegian system to the American system. 4 credits

Negotiation & International Organizations in Norway

This alternative dispute resolution course examines international organizations, devotes special attention to Norway's role as an international neutral, explores cross-cultural negotiation, and provides students with the opportunity to negotiate directly with other students. Whenever possible, students from other countries participate in the negotiation exercises. This simulation experience allows students to confront cultural differences and address alternative negotiating techniques and styles. 2 credits

Course Requirements

Students are required to participate actively in all classes. At the conclusion of the course, students must complete an exam. Grades will be based upon class participation, final examination and a comparative research paper. There are no prerequisites for any course. The acceptance of any credit or grade for these courses by any school other than Hamline is subject to approval by the student’s home school. It is unlikely that participation in a foreign summer program may be used to accelerate graduation. Students interested in acceleration should seek clarification at their home schools in light of ABA Standard 304, Interpretation 304-3.

Schedule

Classes generally are held from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes are conducted in English. In Oslo, class hours may vary somewhat because a significant portion of the time is spent on excursions to various institutions and businesses. In past summers, students have visited the Norwegian Parliament, the Nobel Peace Institute, the National Employers Association, the Labor Party, the Oslo Police Department, Norsk Hydro, the Ship Owners Association, and several Norwegian law practices.
