Why a career in law? Throughout my life, I have always wanted to help people. From early on, I befriended those who were shunned by others. My own family experiences taught me about the injustices faced by ordinary citizens every day. I root for the underdogs; a career in law allows me to do more than just cheer on the sidelines-I can play in the game.
Why did you choose Hamline? The Faculty. I met Professors Sandeen, Failinger, Morrison, and Butterfoss at an event in March. I found mentors before I had even stepped foot on campus. Once school began, I saw these same faculty members (and many more) actively involved in the lives of students and working to create learning experiences outside of the classroom. No matter how busy they get, though, their doors are open and they always find time to help students.
Describe the Hamline culture: I moved here for the sole purpose of going to school and knew no one in Minnesota. The faculty, staff, alumni, and students have become like family to me. This is a place where people learn your name and care how you are doing. I heard law school horror stories about how books are hidden and it's a cut-throat environment. I have never experienced that here. Students look out for each other and work together to tackle coursework, schedules, and even the snow.
Which law student organizations are you involved with at HUSL? The Minnesota Justice Foundation, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, Stonewall Alliance, Environmental Law Society, Minnesota Lavendar Bar Association, American Bar Association, SBA Culture and Diveresity Committee.
Goals after law school: To find a work environment that encourages community involvement, demonstrates integrity, values respect for all people, and promotes collaboration.
Last book read for pleasure: Match Wits with MENSA.
Favorite Twin Cities activity: Sushi at Koyi. I also love walking and biking around the many parks and trails.
What do you like to do to stay active? Well, I have to admit it's difficult with all the candy dishes and free pizza at the law school. I enjoy walking Weaver, the cutest dog I have ever met, around my neighborhood in Hudson, Wisconsin.
What's playing on your MP3 player now? We Belong by Pat Benatar.
One thing you wish you had known before starting law school? To use study aids (many of which are available in the library) from the start of class, if not sooner. And, in the words of Professor Roberts, "To organize the sock drawer because there won't be any time for that during the school year."
How will you improve the world when you're a lawyer? By always listening to what my clients have to say and honoring their wishes the best I can.
