"The study of law is more than what is learned in textbooks, it is how a practitioner translates the written word into practice. At Hamline our clinics provide real legal issues, real cases, and an opportunity for students to put theory into practice."
Clinical legal education offers law students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in their classes to a real problem faced by a client in their community. Students gain legal skills and confidence in their clinical work. They realize the value of their legal education as they work with clients to solve legal problems.
Clinical Professor Angela McCaffrey is the Director of Clinics at Hamline. She administers the clinical program at Hamline which currently consists of eleven clinics. These clinics offer students experience in litigation, mediation, transactional practice and client counseling in a variety of legal specialties. She teaches the Trial Practice Clinic and assists with the development of new clinics in areas of emphasis at Hamline.
Prior to joining Hamline, McCaffrey served as an adjunct faculty member with the Civil Litigation Clinic at William Mitchell College of Law and as staff attorney at Southern Minnesota Regional Services. While in practice, her areas of emphasis were juvenile, social security, public benefits, and unemployment law. She also supervised the administration of the 300-member Ramsey County Volunteer Attorney Panel at Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services.
Clinical Professor McCaffrey has published law review articles on the history of pro-bono in Minnesota and the value of and methods of teaching law clinics. She has also written an article on how to teach law students to work with interpreters and is a frequent CLE presenter on this topic. Professor McCaffrey can be reached at amccaffrey@hamline.edu. Angela McCaffrey was sponsored by Connect U.S/Russia, along with Professor Ann Juergens, William Mitchell College of Law, for a teaching exchange February 3 to 13, 2005 in Moldova. We taught classes at the State University of Moldova, Chisinau, Komrat State University, Komrat, and Real Humanities University, Cahul. Our goal was to demonstrate American clinical teaching methodologies. We developed hypotheticals that allowed the students to participate in exercises raising interviewing and ethical issues and to engage in litigation and mediation experiences. We met with and provided materials to faculty members. This experience is described in the article listed on Faculty Scholarship, Role-plays as Rehearsals for "Doing the Right Thing" - Adding Practice in Professional Values to Moldovan and United States Legal Education.
