Areas of legal expertise: admiralty, international law/litigation, comparative law (civil law legal systems)
Professor Swanson brings experience in both practice and academic study of international law. He practiced law with the Wall Street firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy, where he gained experience in international banking and civil litigation. Prior to joining Hamline, Professor Swanson was a graduate fellow at Yale Law School researching international law.
He has served as chair of the Maritime Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools. Professor Swanson has published articles on public international law, international civil litigation, admiralty, the European Economic Community, and trusts. While in law school, he served as the executive articles editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transitional Law and was elected to the academic honor society Order of the Coif.
Professor Swanson teaches International Studies, International Civil Litigation, Comparative Law, Admiralty, Torts, and seminars on international law topics, such as national security law, the Nuremberg Trials, and international water pollution. He serves as advisor for the International Law concentration.
