Norway Program Details

BergenHousing

Students participating in the summer program are housed in university dormitories in both Bergen and Oslo. Facilities are modern and equipped for cooking; however, cookware and utensils may not be provided. Both residence halls are located outside the center of town but on public transportation lines directly into the center city. Dorm rooms will be available on May 24. Students are responsible for arranging temporary housing if arriving before May 24 or staying after the last day of the program.

Facilities

Courses meet in on-campus classrooms. Dormitories are located some distance from the classroom buildings, necessitating the use of public transportation. Administrative offices for the program are in the law facility of the University of Bergen. Facilities at both the universities of Oslo and Bergen are accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Food

Food in Norway is more expensive than in the United States. Food is available at campus cafeterias on both campuses.

Planning a Program Budget

Total cost of the program is estimated at around $ 7,500

  • $250 Application fee (non-refundable)
  • $3,750 Tuition (6 credits) (anticipated)
  • $1000 Fees (Includes accommodations in Oslo and Bergen, round trip train ticket between Bergen and Oslo and all course materials)
  • $1100 approximate airfare from US to Oslo (this is an average and can be more or less depending on the carrier and timing of ticket purchase)*
  • $1,250 miscellaneous expenses (local travel, meals, personal expenses, etc. – this will vary depending on individual spending habits)*

*Students are responsible for international airfare, transfers to housing, additional meals, health insurance coverage, transportation within Europe, and personal expenses.

Transportation

Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Norway. Round-trip rail tickets will be provided for the travel between Bergen and Oslo.

Students

In Summer 2006, 17 law students participated in the program. Ten of those students were from Hamline, while 7 of the students came from seven schools around the country. In 2007 and 2008, the groups were smaller, with only 6 students participating, 3 from Hamline, and 3 from other schools. To the extent possible, students enrolled in the Erasmus Program (an international exchange program) at the University of Bergen may participate in the Negotiation & International Organizations in Norway course. In the past, students from Norway, Russia, and Germany have participated.
