Policies -- Registration Instructions -- Course Limitations, Grades, Legal Perspectives & Skills -- Exams -- Tuition & Financial Aid -- Miscellanea

Online registration begins Monday evening, March 9th at 9:00 p.m.

For All Dispute Resolution Institute Courses
Please see specific course/deadlines information at the DRI website

A $150 per course, non-refundable tuition deposit will be charged to your account for each course. The tuition deposit will be applied toward the total tuition amount. This deposit will only be returned if the applicant is not accepted into the course. The balance of the tuition is due one week prior to the beginning class session for each course after which no refund will be made. If you are placed on the wait list, you will not be charged the $150 until you have a place in the course. Knowing that students may need to coordinate their summer and fall classes before settling on final schedules for summer and fall, Hamline students will be able to register and drop courses online for two weeks, starting Monday, March 9 at 9:00 p.m., without a deposit charge. On Monday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m., online registration will be turned off and all students enrolled at that time will be assessed the non-refundable $150 deposit per course. Students wishing to add a course after that date will need to fill out a paper application (available on-line from the DRI website at  http://law.hamline.edu/adr/dispute-resolution-summer-institute.html) and submit it with the $150 per course deposit* to the HUSL Office of the Registrar. Those wishing to drop a course after that date will need to fill out an Add/Drop form and submit to the HUSL Office of the Registrar.  Remember, you will forfeit your $150 deposit. *Students seeking financial aid are not required to submit a deposit with the application. Simply write “Financial Aid” at the top your application. Know that your student account will be charged the non-refundable deposit of $150 per course.

POLICIES

You must register online, through Hamline's secure website (Piperline). The following information will help you with the registration process—please read it carefully. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. You may register any time during the registration period. For traditional law school courses, the following deadlines apply:
Last Day to Add
Up to the day before a given course starts.
Last Day to Drop (w/o notation on record or financial penalty)
June and July Courses (summer-long)
Thu., Jun. 4
June Courses
Day before 2nd class meeting
July Courses
Day before 2nd class meeting
Short Courses Offered Throughout the Term
Day before the 1st class meeting

The deadline for registration for any Summer practicum is April 1, 2009.   This early registration closing date is necessary to permit potential attorney mentors at confirmed placement locations to evaluate and approve or reject applicants before the end of Spring semester.
Any student seeking to add a Practicum course  after April 1 must obtain permission from Practicum Director Professor Cathryn Deal at cdeal@hamline.edu

GET FAMILIAR WITH PIPERLINE
Log in to the secured area of Piperline before the registration period begins. Familiarize yourself with the menus and navigation. If you have never used Piperline, it will take you some time to familiarize yourself with it. Don't wait until the first day of registration to do this.

HOLDS
Check your registration status in Piperline for any holds that will prevent you from registering (e.g. financial, immunization, academic probation). It is important that you do this before registration starts, so that you have time to take the necessary steps to clear your hold(s). Registration holds can only be removed by the department that placed it. The Office of the Registrar rarely places registration holds. More commonly, holds are set by Student Accounts, Financial Aid or some other department. If you have a registration hold, please contact the appropriate department.

PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE
Make sure you check the course description for each section you select, and verify that you have met the prerequisites. Please see the class schedule via Piperline for course descriptions.

ERRORS
Errors will be reflected below your registered list of courses with a STOP sign. To determine the specific error, scroll right to the Status field in the last column. A possible Action which allows you to resolve your error is reflected in the pull down column on the left. Below are some errors you may encounter and the Actions required to resolve them:

Status Message

Action

CLOSED - XXX WAITLISTED

Select NONE to drop the selection, or WAIT LIST to add your name to the wait list.

OPEN - XXX WAITLISTED

You may not register for this section because a wait list has been started and there are fewer open seats than students on the wait list. Select NONE to drop this selection, or WAIT LIST to add your name to the wait list.

PREQ-PREREQUISITE MISSING

Select a different section--you do not have the pre-requisite(s) for this section. The system has trouble reading transfer credits and course substitutions used as pre-requisites. If the system does not allow you to register for a section for which you indeed have met the prerequisites, please contact the Office of the Registrar.

DUPLICATE CRN

You have entered the same course twice in the registration grid. Only one of the sections will be saved when you exit.

MAXIMUM HOURS EXCEEDED

You have attempted to register for more credits than you are allowed.

TIME CONFLICT WITH XXXXX

There is a time conflict between two or more sections. You must choose one (you can't enroll in both even if you intend to drop one later).

RESERVE CLOSED-X-ON WAITLIST Open seats are reserved for visiting students (Applies only to DRI courses)

WAIT LIST
If a section is full, you may put yourself on the wait list and register for something else. You may be on as many wait lists as you wish. However, wait listing does NOT mean that you are registered in that section. If you become eligible to enroll, the Office of the Registrar will notify you via email before 5 p.m. March 16th, 2009. You then will have forty-eight hours to change your registration from WAIT LIST to WEB REGISTERED. If you are no longer interested in the section, you may drop the section yourself. After the forty-eight hour period, if you have not registered for the section, you will be automatically dropped from the wait list. This process does not apply to DRI courses.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR REGISTRATION STATUS FROM WAIT LIST TO **WEB REGISTERED**

1. Login to Piperline.

2. Access your schedule for the Summer 2009 term.

3. Find the class in which you are wait listed. Note the CRN (you will need it in the next step).

4. Change the Action value from None to **Web Drop/Delete**. (You must first drop the wait list registration to prevent a duplicate CRN error.)

5. Click the Submit Registration button.

6. Type the CRN in the first box of the Add Classes Worksheet.

7. Click the Submit Registration button.

8. The enrollment Status will change from Wait List to **Web Registered**.

SUCCESSFUL PIPERLINE REGISTRATION
Courses for which you are successfully registered will have two identifiers in the registration grid:

  • Under the Status header, WEB REGISTERED and the date of registration will appear.
  • Under the Action heading, the notation None will appear, indicating no action needs to be taken.
Always click the Submit Registration button to save your final schedule.

If you need assistance with the registration process, the Office of the Registrar is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You may email or call the Office of the Registrar at lawregistrar@hamline.edu / 651.523.2468.
